Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Atar
Neurosurgeon Specialist

Dr. Murat Atar was born in 1985 in Izmir, Turkey. He completed his primary, secondary, and high school education in Antalya. He earned his medical degree (M.D.) from Istanbul University, Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, in 2009. He then completed his residency in Neurosurgery at Izmir Atatürk Training and Research Hospital in 2016, obtaining the title of Specialist in Neurosurgery.

Following his residency, Dr. Atar was accepted for post-residency fellowship training at one of the world’s leading neurosurgical centers, the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Zurich, under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Luca Regli. During this time, he received advanced training in the surgical treatment of complex brain tumors and cerebrovascular diseases, using the most cutting-edge microsurgical techniques and technologies available in contemporary neurosurgery.

In 2017, upon returning to Turkey, he completed a one-month observership at Yeditepe University’s Department of Neurosurgery, where he had the opportunity to closely follow the surgeries of world-renowned neurosurgeons Prof. Dr. Gazi Yaşargil and Prof. Dr. Uğur Türe. During this time, he observed intricate neurosurgical procedures involving highly eloquent brain regions such as the brainstem and thalamus, which are operated on in only a limited number of highly specialized centers globally.

In 2020, Dr. Atar visited Prof. Dr. Yoko Kato at Fujita Health University in Japan—recognized as one of the world’s foremost centers in aneurysm surgery. Previously, in 2015, he successfully completed a cerebral bypass microsurgery course organized by Prof. Yaşargil. In 2016, he also completed Prof. Yaşargil’s white matter fiber dissection course. His neurosurgical thesis, titled “Fiber Dissection and Microsurgical Anatomy of Temporal Lobe White Matter Pathways and Evaluation of Their Functions,” was presented at a world congress in 2017.

He was awarded a research observership scholarship by the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) at New York University’s Department of Neurosurgery. During his medical school years, Dr. Atar worked for two years in the Neurophysiology and Experimental Animal Laboratory at Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty under the mentorship of Prof. Dr. Oktay Seymen, publishing his research in international journals and presenting at international conferences.

During his residency, he conducted multiple anatomical and forensic studies on the human brain at the Izmir Institute of Forensic Medicine, with several studies published in internationally recognized journals. In parallel, Dr. Atar and his colleagues at Dokuz Eylül University’s Biomechanics Laboratory became the first group in Turkey to implement 3D printing technologies in neurosurgical modeling, producing vascular and tumor models. They authored multiple papers that were subsequently published in both national and international journals.

One of their studies on the biomechanics of the dura mater, the brain’s protective membrane, received the “Most Cited Article” Award from the Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society. Another study involving 3D-printed modeling of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs)—commonly referred to as vascular tangles—earned Prof. Dr. Nurcan Özdamar the Best Neurovascular Study Award, following its publication in a leading international journal.

Dr. Atar and his team also published a study on the highly eloquent regions of the temporal lobe and temporal stem, which appeared in a prominent international neurosurgical journal. This study earned fourth place in the Prof. Dr. Gazi Yaşargil Young Neurosurgeons Competition in Turkey. He and his collaborators continue to pursue intensive research in neurosurgical science.

Between 2017 and the end of 2023, Dr. Atar worked at Sultan Abdulhamid Han Training and Research Hospital (formerly Haydarpaşa GATA), a major public hospital, where he received advanced training from esteemed mentors in the surgical management of brain tumors and cerebrovascular diseases using high-end technologies such as neuronavigation, fluorescein and indocyanine green (ICG) angiography, intraoperative ultrasound (iUSG), and neuroendoscopy—all of which were available in only a few centers in Turkey at the time.

He focused particularly on neuroendoscopic techniques, refining his expertise in procedures such as endoscopic third ventriculostomy (ETV) for hydrocephalus, endoscopic intraventricular tumor resection, and endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal pituitary surgery performed solely under neurosurgical control—without the involvement of an ENT team. He also enhanced his skills in the endoscopic management of intracerebral hemorrhages.

Dr. Atar reactivated the neuroanatomy laboratory at his institution, equipping it with a cadaver dissection station with pinned headframes, a white matter fiber dissection area, a cerebral bypass training setup, a 3D photography studio, a 3D printing workspace, and a stock of fixed animal brains prepared for dissection. These facilities were made available for hands-on anatomical training of neurosurgery residents.

He successfully completed cadaveric dissection courses led by Prof. Dr. Necmettin Tanrıöver in 2022 and Prof. Dr. Necmettin Pamir in 2023. Dr. Atar’s academic interest in neuroanatomy remains strong, and he continues his work in this area with dedication.

In October 2023, he began working alongside Prof. Dr. Melih Bozkurt, gaining the honor of observing and directly assisting in the microsurgical treatment of complex brain tumors and challenging cerebrovascular pathologies, including high-grade arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) that are rarely managed elsewhere in Turkey. Dr. Atar regards this mentorship as a uniquely valuable experience and plans to continue further training under Prof. Bozkurt.

In 2024, he was conferred the academic title of Associate Professor by the Interuniversity Academic Council in Turkey.

As of 2025, Dr. Atar practices at his private neurosurgery clinic in Antalya, which he established himself. He continues to perform surgeries in both Istanbul and Antalya, maintains active involvement in academic training both domestically and internationally, and regularly participates in national and international neurosurgical congresses.

He is married, has one child, and is fluent in English at an advanced level.
